How long is each lesson?

Each private lesson is offered in a half-hour or one hour format.  In a one hour beginner lesson, the student will spend approximately half the time with basic horsemanship on the ground and half the time in the saddle.  As the student progresses in knowledge, the amount of ride time may increase.  The amount of "ride" time will depend solely on the ability of the student to correctly groom and tack up efficiently.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

What should I wear to a lesson?

All students are required to wear long pants and hard soled boots with a minimum one inch heel.  The student’s other apparel in class may vary.  Close-fitting clothing is helpful because it aids in determining the student’s position in the saddle.  When the weather is cold, layering will be important to help keep warm.  However, ill-fitting clothing makes it harder to determine what students are doing and creates potential safety hazards. Riding gloves are not required, however are suggested, especially for winter riding.

Do I need to bring anything else to a lesson?

Always be sure to bring something to drink.  Staying hydrated will help you stay focused and help prevent over-heating in warmer temperatures.  When the weather is warm, bug spray for humans such as Off or Cutter, and sun screen are also good ideas.  In cooler temperatures, bring a jacket to the lesson just in case.  It may be chillier than you thought.
